Essential Readings in Nursing Managed Care or Business Computer Applications for Reinforcement

Essential Readings in Nursing Managed Care

Author: Susan Odegaard Turner

This collection of readings is the companion to The Nurse's Guide to Managed Care, which is a text designed to provide a broad overview of the managed health care system as it relates to nursing. Articles were selected for this collection to present a point of view not found in the text, to present more depth to a subject, or to provoke discussion. The readings parallel the chapters in the text. You'll find 40 insightful and thought-provoking articles that will help to facilitate an understanding of the concepts in The Nurse's Guide to Managed Care and draw out discussions of issues ranging from patient care quality to nursing ethics to integrity.

This collection of readings augments key concepts of managed care that might be covered in an academic setting. The text utilizes common examples and is complemented with tables and illustrations. This collection provides the audience with an overview of the complexities found in a managed care environment. This text meets the editor's objectives. Nurses in the managed care industry are targeted, but this book could be easily read by other allied health professionals practicing in managed care. It can also be utilized in academic settings for healthcare providers, administrators, and business students. I believe it could also benefit anyone interested in managed care. The editor opted to include both text and illustrations. The preface is clear and easily understood. The reader is readily engaged through the use of stimulating facts and examples that members of the healthcare team can identify with or have experienced themselves. The table of contents provides a nice overview of the topics discussed in the readings and groups the readings by subject, allowing easy access to a particular reading. Illustrations allow the audience to visualize the concepts presented in the readings. A glossary of terms and definitions is not included, which forces readers to search for definitions to key terms that are utilized. This text is a wonderful addition to the literature that is available as it provides a very operational and practical overview to managed care. I believe it would be a welcome addition to any professional library or academic program. The readings are enjoyable and do not require intense concentration to understand the main concept. The fact that the editor has taken manytopics and put them together in one book is an added plus.
