What Every New Manager Needs to Know: Making a Successful Transition to Management

Author: Gerard H Gaynor

Companies depend on the ability of managers to fulfill organizational vision and meet crucial objectives. But without a firm grasp of critical management competencies, new managers' own futures — as well as the company's — can be at serious risk.

What Every New Manager Needs to Know gives readers the skills they need to excel in their new responsibilities, such as managing the relationship between individual and team performance, making key people decisions like hiring, coaching and evaluating, developing budgets, and mastering the skills of project management. The book explores the key roles managers must take on in different situations, and answers fundamental questions like:

* What does it mean to be a manager?
* What work can be delegated to others?

Pigs Profits and Rural Communities or Federal Taxation

Pigs, Profits, and Rural Communities

Author: Kendall M Thu

This book illuminates the processes and consequences of agricultural industrialization, particularly within the swine production industry, for the social, economic, human, environmental, and political health of the rural United States. Contributors come from widely divergent backgrounds including a former U.S. senator, farmers, a veterinarian, a medical psychologist, an agricultural economist, a biological ecologist, a farm organization president, and anthropologists. Set within the theoretical framework of Walter Goldschmidt's research on the community consequences of industrialized food production, these contributions show that the increasing divergence of ownership has real human costs that continue to be ignored by economic developers and policymakers.

The Mismatched Worker or Practical Guide to Experimental Design

The Mismatched Worker

Author: Arne Kalleberg

In this provocative new study of American workers, sociologist Arne Kalleberg examines the consequences of "mismatched" workers or the lack of fit between people and their jobs. Most people now expect their paid work to be broadly fulfilling and enable them to satisfy the need for challenging work, meaningful relationships, and financial success. Kalleberg shows how these expanding expectations of work are leading to a growing number of mismatches between employees and their jobs. Each chapter frames a different type of mismatch and describes how the poor fit between individuals and their employers have negative consequences for workers and their families. In addition to giving readers a fresh way to think about how people work, The Mismatched Worker also suggests social polices and strategies that might alleviate worker dissatisfaction and simultaneously make organizations more efficient.

International Financial History in the Twentieth Century or Trade Warriors

International Financial History in the Twentieth Century: System and Anarchy

Author: Marc Flandreau

The essays in this book examine the long history of the international financial system in terms of the current debate about globalization and its limits. In the nineteenth century, international markets existed without international institutions. In the interwar years, attempts (largely unsuccessful) at designing a genuine international trade and monetary system were made at the same time (coincidentally) that the system collapsed. In the post-1945 era, the intended design effort was infinitely more successful. The development of large international capital markets since the 1960s, however, increasingly frustrated attempts at international control.

Trade Warriors: States, Firms, and Strategic-Trade Policy in High-Technology Competition

Author: Marc L Busch

In such areas as civil aircraft, semiconductors, high definition television, robotics, and superconductors, states are subsidizing their national champions and competing for market share in the "industries of tomorrow." This book explains why states intervene and (or) retaliate in some high technology industries, but not in others, and how these commercial rivalries are likely to unfold. Dr. Busch argues that states subsidize national champions in industries promising externalities for domestic industries, spend more on subsidies where these benefits do not escape national borders, and are more likely to bring these commercial rivalries back from the brink of a trade war where these subsidies leave both states worse off.

Consuming Motherhood or Dilemmas of International Trade

Consuming Motherhood

Author: Janelle S Ed Taylor

"An intellectually courageous, fresh, and timely collection of essays . . . .This cutting edge volume breathes new life into reproduction studies." -Lynn M. Morgan, Mount Holyoke College

"Brings together well-known and accomplished scholars to reveal and analyze the complexities of the collision between motherhood and consumption . . . . a well-integrated and surprisingly original volume." -Sarah Franklin, author of Embodied Progress: A Cultural Account of Assisted Conception

Consuming Motherhood addresses the provocative question of how motherhood and consumption-as ideologies and as patterns of social action-mutually shape and constitute each other in contemporary North American and European social life. Ideologically, motherhood and consumption are often constructed in opposition to each other, with motherhood standing in as a naturalized social relation that is thought to be uniquely free of the calculating instrumentality that dominates commercial relations. Yet, in social life, motherhood and consumption are inseparable. Whether shopping for children's clothing or childbirth services, or making decisions about adopting children, becoming a mother (and maternal practice more generally) is deeply influenced by consumption. How can the relationship between motherhood and consumption be revealed, and critically analyzed? Consuming Motherhood brings together a group of sociologists, anthropologists, and religious studies scholars to address this question through carefully grounded ethnographic studies. This insightful book reveals how mothers negotiate the contradictory forces that position them as both immune from and the target of consumerist tendencies in contemporary globalsociety.

Janelle S. Taylor is an assistant professor at the University of Washington. Linda L. Layne is Hale Professor of the Humanities and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Danielle F. Wozniak is a research scientist and adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut.

Interesting book: The Opposable Mind or The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid

Dilemmas of International Trade, Vol. 2

Author: Bruce Moon

In the post–Cold War world, trade is the new arena for competition—between nations, between groups, between ethical and theoretical ideas. Political economist Bruce Moon puts contemporary trade events—NAFTA, United States–Japan controversies, the Uruguay Round of GATT, China’s Most Favored Nation status, the founding of the World Trade Organization—into historical and theoretical perspective with the British Corn Laws, the Great Depression, the Bretton Woods system, and the origins of the European Union. Economic theory, terms, and concepts are clearly explained and contextualized with those from international relations.Throughout the book, three central dilemmas are examined: the unequal distribution of income and wealth created by international trade, the tradeoff among competing values that trade requires, and the difficult interrelationship between economic and foreign policy goals within and among trading nations. Though internationally framed, each dilemma has ramifications at a variety of levels all the way down to the individual’s role in the global economy—as a consumer, as a citizen, and ultimately as a moral agent.

Capitalism vs Capitalism or Quantum Investing

Capitalism vs. Capitalism: How America's Obsession with Individual Achievement and Short-Term Profit Has Led It to the Brink of Collapse

Author: Michel Albert

The author believes two approaches are currently used in defining the economic policy of a nation: a Rhine model which emphasizes collective achievement and public consensus, and a supply-side model based on individual achievement and short-term profits. Favoring the Rhine approach, he urges the adoption of specific policy changes by the US and other governments, which he believes will lead to a more balanced economy and society.

Library Journal

In the new world order, where capitalism reigns supreme, who will reign over capitalism: the United States? Germany? Japan? French businessman Albert identifies two variants of capitalism now at odds with each other. The Anglo-American model is characterized by individual gain and laissez-faire government. The Rhine model (followed by Germany and, in some respects, Japan) is a kinder, gentler capitalism in which long-term success of the entire society is paramount. Originally published in France in 1991, this book cannot take into account recent shake-ups in each system, but Albert's case is still significant. This topic will be debated in academia and industry into the next century. Risk Communication and Public Health or The Antitrust Revolution

Risk Communication and Public Health

Author: Peter Bennett

Controversies about risk to public health regularly hit the news, whether about food safety, environmental issues, medical interventions, or "lifestyle" risks such as drinking. To those trying to manage or regulate risks, public reactions sometimes seem bizarre. To the public, the behaviour of those supposedly "in charge" can seem no less odd. Trust is currently at a premium. This new paperback edition of Risk Communication and Public Health brings together a wide variety of perspectives on risk communication, from the health professions, academia, campaigning organizations, government and its advisory committees, and independent consultancies and think tanks. It should be of interest not only to those involved in risk assessment or communication but to anyone interested in the role of science and the media in the political process, and how one bit of "the system" is responding to demands for greater openness and participation. While each chapter is self-contained, the discussion moves progressively through: an introduction to risk communication as a topic of research; studies of prominent cases and the lessons to be drawn from them; contributions to the wider debate about procedures, power, and institutions; and proposals for promoting "good practice" in risk communication, in Government, the Health Service and elsewhere.

The Antitrust Revolution: Economics, Competition, and Policy

Author: John E Kwoka

The Antitrust Revolution: Economics, Competition, and Policy, 4/e, examines the critical role of economic analysis in recent antitrust case decisions and policy. The book consists of economic studies of twenty of the most significant antitrust cases of recent years, fourteen of them new to this edition and six updated from the third edition. These cases include alleged anticompetitive practices by Microsoft, Intel, and American Airlines; mergers-proposed or consummated-by AOL and TimeWarner, GE and Honeywell, MCI WorldCom and Sprint, and BP Amoco and ARCO; and other competitive issues such as bid rigging on school milk contracts, professional sports league practices, prescription drug pricing, and vertical restraints by manufacturers in regard to distributors. New overview essays precede the four sections of the book: Horizontal Structure, Horizontal Practices, Vertical and Related Market Issues, and Network Issues.
Commissioned and edited by John E. Kwoka and Lawrence J. White, the case studies are written by prominent economists who participated in the proceedings. These economists were responsible for helping to formulate the economic issues, undertake the necessary economic research, and offer the economic arguments in court. As a result, they are uniquely qualified to describe and analyze the cases. Fully updated with the most current examples, this volume provides detailed and comprehensive insight into the central role that is now played and will continue to be played by economics and economists in the antitrust process. The Antitrust Revolution, 4/e, is ideal for undergraduate and graduate classes in industrial organization, government policy, andantitrust/regulation law and economics. It is also a useful reference book for lawyers and economists--both academics and practitioners--who are interested in the types of economic analyses that have been applied in recent antitrust cases.
A companion website is now available at oup.com/antitrustrevolution. New to the fourth edition, the site features cases from the previous three editions.

France in Crisis: Welfare, Inequality and Globalization since 1980

Author: Timothy B Smith

Timothy Smith argues that the French economic and social model is imploding on itself despite good intentions. Bad policies and vested interests that exploit the rhetoric of "solidarity" and the specter of globalization have prevented necessary changes from being effected. Making frequent comparisons with the U.S., U.K., Canada, Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands, Smith argues that change need not follow the inegalitarian U.S. or British paths in order to lead to a more balanced French society.
